Want to take a break from the holiday madness? Prestige Fights and Power MMA present Bayou Brawl 7 at the Metropolitan Generations Hall this Friday, Dec. 7 in New Orleans.
“Bayou Brawl 7 will feature New Orleans’ top MMA fighters,” said Carlos Mena, president of Prestige Fights and co-owner of Power MMA. “Our premier fight promotion in New Orleans is back at the Metropolitan with an MMA super show featuring talented athletes from throughout the region.”
Zach “Nutz” Cothren (1-0), a 25-year old Mixed Martial Arts fighter out of New Orleans, will be featured in the main event against Jason Gladey (2-2) in a featherweight fight. Cothren is a hometown favorite for many in the Crescent City. He trains at Power MMA on the West Bank of New Orleans under coaches Jason Giles, Kyle Martin, Toby Wattingney and others who have prepared him for his fight with Gladey.
“From what I remember about Jason is that he was a purple belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu last year when he had a fight against one of my teammates,” Cothren said. “I have been training to be prepared for his takedowns.”
Gladey is a 35-year old polished Brazilian jiu jitsu mixed martial artist. He trains with former Ultimate Fighting Championship veteran Din Thomas at the American Top Team (ATT) training camp in Port St. Lucie, Fla. All of his amateur and professional fights that have resulted in victories have been won by submissions.
Cothren is a blue belt in Brazilian jiu jitsu. He has trained in many other disciplines since he was young, which may give him an advantage on Friday night.
“Martial arts have always been a part of my life,” Cothren said. “My dad owns two taekwondo schools – one in Houma and the other in Thibodeaux. I have been training in this for a very long time. I’ve dabbled in some amateur boxing recently, too, becoming a more well-rounded fighter.”
Cothren serves as a well-respected youth coach at Power MMA, while Gladey is a coach at ATT. It is possible that this fight will go to the ground quickly if Gladey overpowers Cothren. Cothren will need to be careful of a swift-out-of-the-box submission. If Cothren uses his takedown defense and shows Gladey how powerful he can be toe-to-toe, there could be a chance for a main event knockout.
“I feel that I am decent in all disciplines,” Cothren said. “My plan is to figure out my opponent’s weak areas and concentrate on breaking those down. My hands are good, my kicks are good, and my wrestling is good, and I am not threatened by his skills.”
Other featured fights will be a professional “all strike” fight between Kyle Martin (0-0) and Ricky “The Brutal One” Bates. Martin is a world amateur super heavyweight muay Thai champion, and head coach at Power MMA. He will make his pro debut Friday at Bayou Brawl 7.
“Kyle is one of the few athletes in this region that is destined for superstardom,” Mena said. “This guy is phenomenal. He has the potential to be a K-1 champion or maybe even end up in the UFC.”
Bates, a professional MMA fighter based in Mandeville, has a record of 1-3. Bates will have to be prepared for this all strike fight against Martin, as Martin will be looking to walk away with a victory on his debut in front of his teammates and students in his hometown.
Also featured will be featherweights Landon Ackel (0-0) and Jacob Brunelle (0-1). Ackel will debut as a professional as he comes from an impressive amateur MMA record of 6-2, winning the last three fights in the first round. Ackel trains under UFC and Bellator Fighting Championships veteran Rich “No Love” Clementi at Clementi’s Gladiator’s Academy of Slidell.
Brunelle will be looking for a win on his professional record, as he started off his professional debut with a loss by technical knockout. He had a spectacular amateur MMA record of (10-2). These new professionals are trying to become stellar mixed martial artists, so this bout has the potential to be a war.
