A 49-year-old Baton Rouge man was indicted Thursday in a fatal Sept. 30 incident on Gardere Lane in which a woman was knocked off her bicycle by one vehicle and hit by another.
An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury charged Darby Griffin, 1312 Jasper Ave., with hit-and-run driving involving serious bodily injury or death.
Barbara Jacob, 54, who was not wearing a helmet or reflective gear, was pronounced dead at the scene, State Police said.
Jacob was riding her bike about 11 p.m. in the southbound lane of Gardere when a 1999 Mazda struck her rear tire, throwing her from her bike and into the northbound lane of the road, State Police said. A short time later, Jacob was hit by a 2006 Lexus sport utility vehicle traveling north on Gardere. The driver of the SUV stopped and called authorities, troopers said.
Griffin, the driver of the Mazda, fled the scene after allegedly hitting the back tire of Jacob’s bike, troopers said. Griffin and his vehicle were found soon after the crash.
Griffin faces up to 10 years in prison if convicted as charged.
The case has been assigned to state District Judge Don Johnson.
