A member of Louisiana’s top school board missed Wednesday’s meeting after he was in a traffic accident.
Jim Garvey, a Metairie lawyer, said he was driving to Baton Rouge in the rain when he hydroplaned and struck bridge guardrails twice on Interstate 10.
In a telephone interview, Garvey said he may have suffered a mild concussion in the one-car accident.
He said his vehicle is a total loss.
A committee of BESE met until about 9 p.m. Tuesday. The full board began its meeting at about 9 a.m. Wednesday.
Garvey, who is married and has four children, said he always returns home after BESE meetings.
BESE is an 11-member panel that sets policies for public school students statewide.
Even though he missed the meeting, Garvey was elected vice president of the board for 2013.
