A 32-year-old Baton Rouge man was indicted Wednesday in the Sept. 5 drive-by shooting death of a man on Appleton Avenue.
An East Baton Rouge Parish grand jury charged Jermaine Remond Williams, 2742 Rebecca Lynn Ave., with second-degree murder in the killing of David Atkins, 27.
Atkins was walking with another man in the 2700 block of Appleton near Hallmark Drive at 5:30 p.m. when a vehicle drove up, police have said. Williams, who was riding in the vehicle, pointed a gun out of the car and shot at the men, striking and killing Atkins, police said.
The other man walking with Atkins was not harmed.
A second-degree murder conviction carries a mandatory sentence of life in prison. The case has been assigned to state District Judge Mike Erwin.
