Southern women can’t hold lead

COLLEGE STATION, Texas— The Southern women’s basketball team led by as many as 13 points in the second half before Marshall rallied to a 57-47 victory Sunday in the A&M Classic at Texas A&M’s Reed Arena.

Southern (0-5) opened the second half on an 11-0 run and led 37-24 after Lechell Rush’s layup with 17 minutes, 20 seconds left, then managed 10 points the rest of the way. Marshall (3-2) took the lead for good at 41-39 on Shay Weaver’s 3-pointer with 6:47 left. The Thundering Herd outscored the Jaguars 33-21 in the second half.

Adrian Sanders led Southern with 13 points, but she shot just 5-of-21. Kendra Coleman (Donaldsonville) added seven.

Veronica Ruiz had 12 points and 10 rebounds off the bench for Marshall.

Southern returns to action at noon Saturday against St. Bonaventure in a tournament at the University of Toledo.
