Haynesville defeats Westminster

After falling behind by double digits in the first half, Haynesville clawed its way back to a 34-17 win on the road against Westminster Christian Academy on Friday night.

Haynesville running back Cavontae Critton rushed for 101 of the Golden Tornado’s 269 yards, adding one touchdown to help Haynesville improve to 11-2 on the season and advance to the semifinal round of the Class 1A playoffs. WCA’s season ended at 10-3.

WCA scored early in the first with a 33-yard run from Cole Bentley, and Tyler Louviere added a 29-yard field goal to give the Crusaders a 10-0 lead. Haynesville’s Jerrell Jackson sprinted 78 yards to cut the lead to 10-6, but WCA struck again with an 8-yard run from Donyell Young.

Haynesville scored with 23 seconds left before halftime on a 61-yard pass from Jackson to Tyrus Early before a second-half showing gave it the lead. Jackson returned the opening kickoff of the second half 83 yards for a score, and Keshawn Harris and Critton added rushing touchdowns of 35 and 41 yards, respectively.

Class 2A

JOHN CURTIS 62, RIVERSIDE 10: In New Orleans, John Curtis’ high-powered offense proved to be too much for Riverside in a Class 2A quarterfinal matchup Friday night. John Curtis is 12-0 and will advance to the semifinals, while Riverside fell to 6-8.

The Patriots scored early and often, chalking up 48 first-half points as five different Patriots scored touchdowns in the game. Tevin Horton scored twice on the ground in the first half, and Patrick Morton threw for three touchdowns and rushed for another in the Patriots win.

Sherman Badie also caught a touchdown and ran for a score.

Riverside’s Tyler Gauter knocked through a 25-yard field goal in the first quarter, and Deuce Wallace threw a five-yard pass to Herb McGee for the Rebels’ two scores.

Class 1A

KENTWOOD 47, BASILE 14: In Basile, Kentwood’s offensive outburst in the first half paced the Kangaroos.

Kentwood improved to 11-1 on the season and will face Ouachita Christian in the semifinals. Basile’s season ended 11-2.

Kentwood’s Shyheim Carter scored the first two touchdowns of the game on runs of 29 and 5 yards. Jaquavis Roberts added the next two scores, running in from 21 yards out and catching a 30-yard pass from Robert Trout.

Carter scored again from 65 yards to add to his 145-yard performance on the night. Trout caught a 53-yard strike from Tavarious Battiste in the third quarter.

Basile scored once before half on a 29-yard pass from Trent Pyellaquis to Kendrick Ceaser and again in the fourth quarter on a 24-yard punt return by Chazz Swift.
