MIAMI, Fla . — The LSU women’s basketball team opens the two-game Florida International Thanksgiving Classic against No. 12 West Virginia at approximately 7 p.m. Friday in U.S. Century Bank Arena.
Host FIU takes on Iowa in the first contest at 5 p.m. Friday’s winners will meet Sunday.
“We are going to be tested early,” LSU coach Nikki Caldwell said. “We have to stand firm and rely on our defense and board play. That’s an area where we are extremely challenging our team”
LSU (1-2) seeks to end a two-game road losing streak after a 71-69 loss at Georgetown on Monday in Washington. The Lady Tigers nearly recovered from a nine-point deficit in the final minutes thanks to senior guard Adrienne Webb and junior forward Theresa Plaisance.
The two combined for 41 points, the first time LSU produced two 20-point performances in the same game since a triple-overtime contest against Ole Miss on Feb. 7, 2010.
Plaisance is LSU’s leading scorer and rebounder, averaging 15.3 points and 11.0 rebounds.
She is second in the Southeastern Conference in rebounding and 10th in scoring.
West Virginia (3-0) has defeated two of its three opponents by double digits. The Mountaineers are holding opponents to 49.7 points per game and feature LSU transfer Ayana Dunning, who played her freshman season with the Lady Tigers in 2008-09.
She’s averaging a team-high 12.0 points.
WAVE OPEN TOURNEY IN ARIZONA: The Tulane women’s team will open play in the Hilton Garden Inn Thanksgiving Tournament on Friday, when the Green Wave take on Bradley (2-2) at 5:05 p.m. at Rolle Activity Center on the campus of Northern Arizona University.
The Wave are one of four teams in town; Western Michigan will take on host NAU at 3:05 p.m. Friday’s winners will meet in the title game Saturday at 5:05 p.m.; the consolation game is set for 3:05.
Tulane enters the weekend, 3-0 after downing Louisiana Tech in the season opener 66-59 on Nov. 9, defeating ULM 70-60 on Nov. 12 in Monroe and rolling past Southern 65-45 on Nov. 16 in Baton Rouge.
