SLU music school hosts band concert

Southeastern Louisiana University’s Community Music School will present the Northlake Community Band concert at 7:30 p.m. Tuesday in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium.

Titled “Lola and the Walking Frog,” the concert is free and will feature “Bombasto March” by Orin R. Farrar; “The Walking Frog” by King, arranged by Robert E. Foster; “Espana Rhapsody” by Emmanuel Chabrier; “Light Cavalry Overture” by Franz Von Suppe; and “Damn Yankees” by Richard Adler and Jerry Ross.

Livingston SPCA offers pet adoptions

The Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals of Livingston will host a pet adoption event from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. Dec. 8 at Walgreens, 101 Florida Ave. SE, Denham Springs.

The SPCA will have several puppies, kittens and adult dogs and cats available for adoption.

This event will be on the Denham Springs Christmas Parade route.

Adoption fees vary and include mandatory spay/neuter and age-appropriate vaccinations.

SLU students plan Shining Stars show

Southeastern Louisiana University’s Community Music School will present the Shining Stars concert at 7 p.m. Monday in the Pottle Music Building Auditorium. Admission is free.

The concert will feature the Community Music School students who are recipients of the First Guaranty Bank scholarship. The soloists will be accompanied by SLU’s graduate string trio and Liliia Oliinyk, an award-winning pianist and a senior piano major at Southeastern.

Students participating in this concert include Meredith Faulkner, bassoon; Ashley Johansen, violin; Rachael Knaps, voice; Umika Kuroda, violin; Elise Strain, violin; Griffin Wiemelt, violin; and Riley Wiemelt, violin.

Founded in 1996, SLU’s Community Music School offers children and adults private and group music lessons taught by Southeastern faculty members, graduate students and community professionals.

Spring registration is under way. Lessons begin on Jan. 28.

French Settlement food festival set

The Fourth annual St. Joseph Catholic Church Winter Wonderland Food Festival: A Taste of French Settlement will be from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday.

Plates are $7 and will include sauce patate, brisket and pork loin, barbecue ribs, seafood fettuccine, jambalaya, hot wings and a large selection of side dishes.

The event will feature more than 40 craft booths, a car show and free activities for children.

Pictures with Santa will cost $5.
