Five Alpha Lambda Chapter members of Delta Kappa Gamma International Society of key women teachers attended the Southeast District Meeting on Oct. 27 in Bogalusa. Alpha Lambda President Fran Major represented the chapter in the Procession of Flags.
Susan Collura and Major were recognized for their years of teaching. Betsy Stafford, Myrna Tuminello and Joyce Landry joined the Epsilon State officers for dinner on the night before the meeting.
Members toured the Indian museum at Cassidy Park in Bogalusa. The Native American Museum houses exhibits portraying daily life and ceremonies of tribes living in southeast Louisiana.
Alpha Lambda members also heard Epsilon State officer and committee reports.
The Nu Gamma Omega Chapter of Alpha Kappa Alpha sorority sponsored an original play, “Love Doesn’t Have to Hurt,” on Oct. 27 at McKinley High School.
The play was part of the sorority’s Social Justice and Human Rights Initiative, which addresses gender equality issues and includes an emphasis on domestic violence. October was Domestic Violence Awareness Month.
The chapter partnered with Public Awareness Theatre, owned by the Rev. Lance Brown. The play told the story of “Diamond,” a young college woman who had to learn about domestic violence the hard way.
The sorority partnered with the LSU Library Association and AKA chapters Phi Sigma Omega and Tau Kappa Omega to collect more than 500 toiletries, which were donated to the Capital Area Family Violence Intervention Center during intermission.
