The Retired State Employees of Louisiana held its fourth annual Conference and Expo Oct. 1-3 at the Crowne Plaza Hotel in Baton Rouge. Former Gov. Edwin Edwards was the keynote speaker.
Louisiana Chapter Retirees of the Year Yvonne Prejean, Acadiana; Charlotte Scallen, Alexandria; Connie Carlton, Baton Rouge; Richard Ott, Lake Charles; Sue Gewin-Jex, Monroe; Jimmy Fitzmorris, New Orleans; Kathy Singleton, North Shore; and Nyla Farley, Shreveport, were honored. Former Gov. Jimmie Davis was inducted as the first inductee to the Louisiana Retired State Employees Hall of Fame citing his establishment of the Louisiana State Employees Retirement System in 1946.
The Plush Butterflyz social club’s second annual cancer walk was held on Oct. 20 at the Dixon Correctional Institute Park in Jackson. Participants included cancer survivors, four other social clubs and one teacher’s organization. Groups that joined were Glitz and Glamour, LOVE, Diverse Divas, BOSS Divas and Alpha Mu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma.
Delta Kappa Gamma participated for cancer awareness and as part of the Walk Across Louisiana for Literacy to raise money to buy every kindergarten student a book for Christmas.
Prizes were awarded to the first to cross the finish line, the first to arrive at the park ready to walk, last to cross the finish line, and the oldest walker.
Dollar General of Jackson donated the prizes. Each participant received a certificate of appreciation, camouflage pink T-shirt and several small tokens.
Breast cancer survivors Melissa Hills Jackson, Jeane Fisher and Debra Wright were honored. Diane McCray and the Rev. Cary Payton cooked jambalaya. Pink balloons were released in memory of Linda Bell, Annie Bradford, Kathie Bradford, Lou Ferguson, Jane Franklin, Elaine Freeman, Essie Hardy, Ernestine Higgenbottom, Ruby Hill, Ruby Hollins, Mary G. Hunde, Glenda Jackson, Evelyn Southall, Mary Williams, Rosetta Williams and Thelma Williams, who died of breast cancer.
