Over these many years I’ve noted that my mom resides in a small town in western Pennsylvania, Ellwood City. As noted in a previous column, at this time of the year our brother Mark clears the property by “rakin’ the leaves.” Similar to yards here in Baton Rouge, mom’s is covered with leaves due to wind direction and maple trees in adjacent yards. The leaf-raking routine was another chore during our younger years. Once raked, they were transported to the back of the property, separated into smaller piles and burnt. The EPA hasn’t been to Wiley Hill, where this process continues and the smell of burning leaves is a subtle reminder that Fall is ending and Winter winds are about to blow.
Another use of leaves, tomorrow. Fastcast: Perfect.
