St. Joseph’s posts 4 top times in prelims at state swim meet

SULPHUR — St. Joseph’s Academy had two individuals and two relays post the top times in the Division I preliminaries at the Louisiana High School Athletic Association Swimming Championships on Friday at the SPAR Aquatics Center.

SJA’s MC Beaver posted the best time (54.32 seconds) in the 100-yard freestyle. Teammate Cameron Balkom had the top time in the 100 breaststroke (1:08.76).

Saturday’s finals begin at 9:30 a.m. for Division II and 3:30 p.m. for Division I at the SPAR Aquatics Center.

The Redstickers’ 200 freestyle relay posted a top time of 1:40.77. Members of that team are Clayton Black, Victoria Padial, Balkom and Katelyn Rodriguez, who had the second-best time in the 200 freestyle (1:56.00).

In the 200 medley relay, SJA will be seeded first thanks to the team of Caroline Beene, Balkom, Mary Katherine Miller and Lindsay Hagmann.

SJA’s 400 freestyle relay enters the final with the second-best time. Members of that team are Rodriguez, Black, Miller and Padial.

In the Division I boys, East Ascension’s Mason Hutchinson owns the top prelim time in the 100 butterfly (53.20) and second-best in the 200 individual medley (2:00.66).

Catholic’s Colin Bone posted the best time in the 200 freestyle (1:47.15). The Bears’ 400 freestyle relay finished first in 3:19.32. Members of that team are Brady Grenfell, Casey Panepinto, James Chastain and Bone.

In the 200 freestyle relay, the Bears’ Grenfell, Graham Gardner, Chastain and Bone had the second-best time (1:30.39).

In the 50 freestyle, Dutchtown’s Eric Ferrell had the No. 2 time at 21.90.

Catholic’s Jackson Forbes was second in the 200 freestyle (1:47.67).

Division II

Defending champions St. Scholastica (girls) and Alexandria Senior High (boys) had their share of success in Friday morning preliminary heats.

Covington-based St. Scholastica had the top marks in all three girls relays.

SSA’s Madeleine Rawls and Kristen Jennings each recorded two top qualifying times. Rawls led the 200-yard individual medley (2:33.45) and the 100 freestyle (57.89). Jennings was first in the 100 butterfly (1:04.81) and 100 backstroke (1:03.08).

ASH’s Zachary Harrison posted the top times in the boys 50 (22.17) and 100 (48.65) freestyles.

Baton Rouge High had two second-place qualifiers. The Bulldogs’ Jerry Ye and Kara Ye posted second-place finishes. Jerry Ye was second in the 100 backstroke, while Kara Ye took second in the girls 200 IM. The BRHS girls 400 freestyle relay team was second to SSA.
