The Southern University women’s basketball team added some new pieces when the early signing period opened Wednesday, picking up signatures from two teammates out of Kissimmee, Fla.: forward Tralonnie Tisdale and guard Brandii Walker.
Tisdale, a 6-foot-1 center/power forward, and Walker, a 5-10 point guard, play at Poinciana High School. Both visited with coach Sandy Pugh a month ago.
“I had a chance to watch both of those kids in early October at a shootout down in West Palm Beach, Fla., and was just so impressed with them that I changed my ticket to go and visit with their parents,” Pugh said. “We really, really were fortunate to be able to sneak in on top of a lot of people and snatch those guys up.”
Tisdale and Walker visited Southern and fell in love with the campus, coaches and program so quickly, Pugh said, that they canceled the rest of their recruiting trips. Pugh said both fit well in the Jaguars’ new offensive scheme, in which versatility is a must.
“We were definitely looking for a high school post player and an athlete,” Pugh said of Tisdale. “The style of game we’re going toward is more of an open, free-play, flexibility-type thing where the kids can play multiple positions, and Tralonnie can play the 3, 4 and 5. She’s long, (has range), plays off the bounce, finishes very well around the basket and is a solid offensive and defensive rebounder.”
Pugh spoke just as highly of Walker, who likely will see the most time as a swingman.
“Brandii is a tremendous shooter,” she said. “She’ll be able to hit the 3-point bucket and the midrange pull-up. She definitely has a good basketball mind, so we’re real excited about her.”
