Baton Rouge residents will be allowed to purchase discounted backyard compost bins or rain barrels from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. Dec. 1 at Memorial Stadium, 1702 Foss St.
Organized by the city-parish recycling office, the event usually draws a crowd, said Susan Hamilton, city-parish recycling director.
“They go like hotcakes,” she said.
The compost bins retail for $100 but will be on sale for $30 during the event. The rain barrels retail for $150 and will sell for $45. In addition, there will be kitchen scrap pails on sale for $7 and compost turners for $15.
“They’re awesome Christmas presents at that price,” Hamilton said.
Residents also can pick up free mulch from Nature’s Best Organics with either a scoop per pickup truck or load-your-own containers.
All items will be available as long as supplies last.
The event is something that the recycling office has put on for 25 years, Hamilton said, although the sale just involved compost bins for a long time.
The “Earth Machine” compost bin is made of black recycled plastic, has a 10.5-cubic-foot capacity, a 10-year warranty, and fits easily into an average sized sedan. The 55-gallon “Systern” Rain Barrel, made of recycled plastic, comes partially assembled.
Hamilton said people interested in buying a compost bin and rain barrel will probably not be able to fit both into an average sized sedan.
Judging by sales in the past, she said, people don’t need to show up first thing in the morning when there are usually longer lines.
Hamilton said that cash is not accepted, only checks or credit cards, and volunteers can no longer load the containers into vehicles because of liability concerns, Hamilton said.
ExxonMobil ExC!TE volunteers will help distribute the bins and barrels and AT&T Pioneers will act as cashiers, Hamilton said.
In addition, the LSU Cooperative Extension Master Gardeners and the East Baton Rouge Parish Recycling Office will hold an Education Expo to teach people how to use the compost bins, as well as how to practice grass cycling and mulching.
