The Nature Conservancy is seeking volunteers for the group’s Cypress Island Preserve, which includes the popular Lake Martin rookery south of Breaux Bridge that attracts thousands of nesting herons, egrets, spoonbills and other water birds each spring.
Volunteer docents are needed to staff the visitor center at the Lake Martin site. A training and potluck social for new volunteers is scheduled for January.

A dedication ceremony is set for 1 p.m. Nov. 18 at the Sugar Cane Festival building for 12 new bronze markers for historical sites in New Iberia.
A free lecture by historian Jose Manuel de Molina will follow the ceremony at 2 p.m.
The markers, which are in French, Spanish and English, highlight significant events in the city’s past and historically important buildings, including the Bazus Building, the Evangeline Theatre and Saint Peter’s College.
A rape prevention and awareness seminar is scheduled for 6 p.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday at Wharton Hall Auditorium, room 222, on the campus of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette.
The event is sponsored by Hearts of Hope and the ULL Student Health Center.
The St. Martin Parish Library has secured a $20,000 grant from the state Department of Education for education and cultural programs, according to a news release from the library system.
Programs supported by the funding include computer training, early literacy programs, and performing artists in schools and libraries, according to the news release.
The Extra Mile is sponsoring a talent show from 2 p.m. to 6 p.m. on Nov. 18 at Cité des Arts on Vine Street in downtown Lafayette.
Admission is an unwrapped toy that will be given to local children this Christmas.

Horticulturist Jim Foret will lead a bike tour of historic oak trees in the New Iberia area from 8:30 a.m. to 11 a.m. on Saturday.
The free event is sponsored by the Iberia Parish Library and Friends of the Library.
The tour will begin at the Main Library at 445 East Main Street in New Iberia.
Helmets are required for the bike tour, and children must be accompanied by an adult.
