What we learned
On a three-game losing streak and trailing by 21 points in the first half, Southern could’ve easily gone belly-up. The Jaguars had little to play for, other than pride and to send their senior class out with a win in the home finale. But they roared back to life, pulling to within one point in the final minute, with a chance to win it. Interim coach Dawson Odums might not get the full-time job at SU, and he might not make all the right calls. But clearly, his players never gave up on him.
Dray Joseph has been a streaky quarterback in his three seasons at Southern, following great performances with erratic, turnover-prone games. But heading into 2013, Joseph might be the best in the Southwestern Athletic Conference. Heading into the weekend, Joseph led the league in passing yards (1,878) and touchdowns (17) with only six interceptions. Saturday, he completed 18 of his first 24 throws, and his 349 yards were a season high.
Don’t look now, but the Bayou Classic will be upon us in two weeks — and given their cringe-worthy records, Southern and Grambling haven’t given fans many reasons to pack the Mercedes-Benz Superdome. Last year’s game drew 40,715 fans, an all-time low. This year’s crowd could be even smaller.
