Any hope of a Jonesboro-Hodge upset bid against University was put to rest early Friday.
Nick Brossette rambled 44 yards on the game’s second play, starting a 55-point Cubs avalanche in the first half of a 55-15 U-High Class 2A bidistrict win at Jeff Boss Field-Gill Stadium
The Cubs poured on 35 points in the first quarter that extended to 55 by halftime as the starters needed only 31 first-half snaps to score seven touchdowns. U-High (10-1), the No. 3 seed, advanced to play 14th-seeded Loreauville, which defeated Ville Platte 42-25.
“They’ve got a lot of good players, probably more 2A guys than we did, but we did well,” University coach Chad Mahaffey said. “We were fortunate to get up on them early.”
Jonesboro-Hodge (4-7) scored all its points in the second half after U-High emptied its bench and the game went to a running clock.
“We came in ready to play, and we were prepared,” Tigers coach Todd Scott said. “They were just awful good.”
U-High quarterback Nik Kragthorpe completed 11 of 15 passes for 175 yards and three touchdowns and ran for another before being knocked out of the game with a minor injury in the second quarter. Brossette had three touchdowns and 110 yards before shutting it down by halftime.
University coach Chad Mahaffey said J-Hodge’s preoccupation with stopping the run opened up the passing game.
“They put a lot of guys in the box and try to force you to (throw),” Mahaffey said. “It was good that we were able to do that. And even with the numbers in the box, we didn’t run it great, but I thought we ran it well enough.”
The Cubs had 184 of their 189 rushing yards in the first haf and had 359 of their 400 yards by halftime.
Brossette also had first-half touchdown runs of 6 and 3 yards. Kragthorpe had a 15-yard touchdown run and touchdown passes of 33 yards to D’Vante Dotson, 19 yards to Manny Miles and 7 yards to Jarrod Franklin.
U-High added a special teams touchdown on a 14-yard blocked punt return by Tre Jackson on a punt blocked by Dotson.
