SOBOLEWSKI NAMED PEOPLES HEALTH CHAMPION: The Peoples Health Champions program honored Carol Sobolewski, of Mandeville, as its sixth champion of the 2012-13 NFL season on Nov. 5 during the New Orleans Saints game against the Philadelphia Eagles. A Peoples Health Champion is someone who has done something extraordinary after age 65 and who proves that excellence is achieved through experience.
On July 28, at age 69, Sobolewski won the first triathlon in which she has ever competed, and she had recently recovered from knee surgery. The Baton Rouge Rocketchix Triathlon involved back-to-back courses of swimming, cycling and running.
During her recovery from surgery, she also lost her mother. Sobolewski started a rigorous exercise and swimming program. She took those first laps around the pool with the aid of a coach who pushed her to not only swim faster, but to eat healthier and take better care of herself. Sobolewski lost 27 pounds, gained muscle mass and reaffirmed her positive spirit and confidence.
“I’m 70 years old, and I motivate other women to become active, vivacious grandmothers like me,” Sobolewski said. “Life is just beginning.”
