CONVENT — St. James Parish President Timmy Roussel said Friday that a nearly $2 million deficit in the parish’s proposed $64.1 million budget for fiscal year 2013 will be offset by a robust ending fund balance from the 2012 fiscal year budget.
“We’ve definitely got the cushion in our budget for that variance,” Roussel said.
Projected revenues in the budget for fiscal year 2013 are expected to reach $62.1 million while expenditures are forecast to reach $64.1 million.
The 2012 total ending
fund balance totaled $57.1 million, according to Roussel’s office.
Roussel presented the proposed budget to the Parish Council on Wednesday, noting that revenues from property and sales taxes are expected to increase from the previous year.

The public hearings will be held at 6:15 p.m. Nov. 21 in Vacherie and Dec. 5 in Convent.
Councilmen Alvin St. Pierre, Terry McCreary, Jimmy Brazan, Charles Ketchens and Ken Brass voted to introduce the ordinance. Councilmen Ralph Patin and Jason Amato did not attend Wednesday’s meeting.

VOTING PRECINCTS: Council members unanimously voted to consider a proposed ordinance creating three new precincts as part of the St. James Parish School Board’s redistricting plan.
The School Board was required to create new precincts 8-D, 8-E and 8-F to meet federal reapportionment requirements as a
result of demographic changes noted in the 2010 U.S. census.
The Parish Council will hold a public hearing on the proposed ordinance at 6:15 p.m. Dec. 5 in Convent.
