Mu Sigma Chapter of Sigma Gamma Rho Sorority Inc. will kick off its 18th debutante season with an annual presentation tea at 2 p.m. Saturday at the activity center of St. Mark United Methodist Church, 6217 Glen Oaks Drive in Baton Rouge.
Five young women will be introduced during the event.
They are Nyla Thomas Hall, Da’Jiaron Rochelle Houston, Ty’Nisha La’Sha Lodge, Chelsea M. Maple and De’Leon Domineek Williams.
Nyla Thomas Hall is the daughter of Kim and Byron Hall Sr. Her grandparents are Donald W. and Sybil D. Thomas and Dr. Celie Hall and the late Herman P. Hall. She attends Broadmoor High School, where she is a member of the Beta Club and the cross country track team.
Da’Jiaron Rochelle Houston is the daughter of Jacqueline and Roland Houston III. Her grandparents are the late Roosevelt Kaufman and the late Helen M. Millican and Annette B. Houston and the late Roland Houston Jr. She attends Southern University Lab School.
Ty’Nisha La’Sha Lodge is the daughter of Frank Lodge Jr., of St. Gabriel, and Tonya I. Lands. Her grandparents are Maxine M. and Samuel Lands Jr. and Lucille Lodge, of St. Gabriel, and the late Frank Lodge Sr. She attends Jehovah Jireh Christian Academy, and is a member of Girl Scouts East of Louisiana Inc. and Sigma Gamma Rho Rhoer Club.
Chelsea M. Maple is the daughter of Charlotte and Dwayne Maple Sr. Her grandparents are Margaret Major-Eli and the late Henry Major Sr. and Alfred Maple and the late Marie Maple. She attends Tara High School.
De’Leon Domineek Williams is the daughter of the Rev. Anthony and Jacqueline A. Burton. Her grandparents are Annie Laurendine and Alvin Allen Sr. and Dora Lea Burton, of St. Helena. She attends Belaire High School and is a member of Sigma Gamma Rho Rhoer Club.
Sigma Gamma Rho sorority was founded in 1922 in Indianapolis, on the campus of Butler University.
Mu Sigma was organized in 1945 and is dedicated to providing service to the community, promoting academic achievement and developing strong leadership qualities among youth. The debutante experience is a scholarship project to help deserving young women in their pursuit of higher education.
The debutante season will culminate with the Debutante Presentation Cotillion Feb. 16 at Stage1.
The theme will be “Mu Sigma’s Expressions of Opal Beauties.”
