Louisiana Youth  Orchestras will give  first concert Nov. 10

Saturday, Nov. 10, opens the first performance of the Louisiana Youth Orchestras.

The orchestra program features more than 150 young musicians, ages 6-20, playing string, wind and percussion instruments. This free concert will take place at 3 p.m. in Baton Rouge Community College’s Magnolia Performing Arts Pavilion.

The Louisiana Youth Orchestra is under the direction of Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra Assistant Conductor David Torns. The program for the afternoon consists of “Poet and Peasant Overture” by Suppe and “Piano Concerto No. 1 in B-flat minor” by Tchaikovsky, featuring Deborah Goppelt on the piano. Goppelt is the winner of the 2012 Louisiana Youth Orchestra Concerto Competition.

The Louisiana Youth Orchestras Series consists of three concerts.

The other concerts in the series will be Saturday, Feb. 16, 2013; and Sunday, May 5, 2013. All concerts begin at 3 p.m. in the Magnolia Performing Arts Pavilion and are free.

The Louisiana Youth Orchestra is an educational component of the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra and a project of the Baton Rouge Symphony League and supplements and enhances music education in schools and promotes the highest standards of orchestra performance.

Since its debut in 1984, the orchestra has grown to more than 150 musicians between the ages of 6 and 20, selected by competitive auditions to present three concerts.
