More than 250 participants are expected to engage in interactive music and dance workshops with renowned New Orleans master performing artists during Nfungotah Inc.’s third annual Dance for Life event from 8:30 a.m. to 6:30 p.m. Saturday, Nov. 10, at the New Orleans Center for Creative Arts, 2800 Chartres St., New Orleans.
New to this year’s event is a very intimate prenatal yoga workshop for expectant parents. Nyasha Bonner-Shakir, a certified midwife and yoga instructor, will lead the class in which mothers in their second and third trimesters will learn skillful breathing and birthing techniques.
“We hope to make this an enriching experience for expecting mothers and their partners and provide them with useful exercises that can make the process of delivery easier and a more positive experience,” Bonner said.
The Dance for Life event features diverse, hour-long classes in body conditioning, hip hop, jazz as well as West African, Haitian and Brazilian music and dance.
Master music and dance instructors will teach all classes, which are designed for participants at any level — beginner, intermediate or advanced.
Several respected instructors and artists will lead the workshops including: Ja’nese Brooks-Galathe (body conditioning); Torrence Taylor (hip hop); Mariama Curry and Mikeal Hawkins (West African music and dance); Nyasha Bonner-Shakir (prenatal yoga); Luis “FanFan” Dumas and Peniel Guerrier (Haitian music and dance); Greer Mendy (jazz); and Curtis Pierre and Carol Pierre (Brazilian music and dance).
Dance for Life 2012 is an artistic music and dance experience, and is free and open to individuals of all ages.
