Events commemorating Veterans Day take place throughout the Westside during the next few weeks.

On Sunday, Port Allen and West Baton Rouge Parish will host the Eighth annual Veterans on Parade at 1:30 p.m. in downtown Port Allen.

This year’s parade will include a flyover of World War II aircraft as well as the firing of a Civil War-era cannon.

The parade also will feature a float contest and a patriotic program near the steps of the parish courthouse.

The West Baton Rouge Museum will host a free open house and reception beginning at 11:30 a.m. Sunday, before the parade, for its exhibit “Our Lives, Our Stories: America’s Greatest Generation.” The exhibit will run until Jan. 7.

Visitors to the museum will be able to enjoy soda fountain-style ice cream floats sponsored by Kleinpeter Dairy and Coca-Cola, watch World War II-era movies and listen to period music.

New Roads will host its downtown Veterans Day Parade at 10 a.m. Saturday on Main Street

A special veterans breakfast will be held from 8:30 a.m. to 9:30 a.m. at St. Paul’s Holy Trinity Episcopal Church Parish Hall prior to the parade.

Brig. Gen. Barry D. Keeling, Louisiana Army National Guard director of joint staff, is serving as guest speaker for the Veterans Day program immediately following the parade at the Julien Poydras Museum.

Brusly will host its annual Veterans Day Program and Reception at noon Nov. 11 in Brusly Town Hall.

This public is invited to join and participate in this tribute to veterans.

Main Street Halloween

New Roads Main Street and the city will host their 13th annual Trick-or-Treat Main Street celebration Wednesday in downtown New Roads.

Children under the age of 13 are invited to participate.

A “Best Halloween Costume” contest will take place at 5:45 p.m. in the parking lot of City Hall. Registration for the costume contest begins at 4:30 p.m.

Meet and greet

The West Baton Rouge Chamber of Commerce and Guaranty Broadcasting WTGE-FM, 107.3, will host their final “Meet and Greet” for all the candidates running in upcoming elections for mayor, town or city councils, Public Service Commission and Supreme Court in the Port Allen area.

The event is at 6 p.m. Thursday at the Port Allen Community Center.

The event is free and open to the public.

Bingo night

St. Aubry Ladies Auxiliary will host Bingo Night at Immaculate Heart of Mary Catholic Church Hall on Friday. The event starts at 5:30 p.m. with refreshments. Bingo play begins at 7 p.m.
