CHAPEL HILL, N.C. — The LSU women’s golf team is tied for sixth place after two rounds of the Ruth’s Chris Lady Tar Heel Invitational on Saturday at the Finley Golf Course.
LSU posted a 14-over 302 on the second day of the three-day tournament and is at 20-over 596 (294-302), tied with Ole Miss (299-297). While host North Carolina has opened a huge lead after shooting a 5-over 293 to stand at 5-over for the tournament, second place is just five shots in front of LSU in the 15-over par score of 591 by Baylor. Florida is third at 17-over 593, with North Carolina State and Virginia at 19-over 595 in a tie for fourth.
Individually, Lindsay Gahm remained in seventh place after a 2-over 74 and stands in a group tied at 1-over 145. Hayley Davis of Baylor is the leader at 4-under 140 (67-73). Madelene Sagstrom is also in position for a good finish after a round of even par 72 Saturday. She is tied for 14th place at 2-over 146.

Closes First Half to SEC schedule vs. Alabama: The LSU volleyball team wraps up its season’s long four-game homestand and the first half its SEC schedule at 1 p.m. Sunday against Southeastern Conference Western Division rival Alabama.
LSU (7-11, 3-6 SEC) carries a 32-22 series edge over the Crimson Tide (14-6, 3-5 SEC). Earlier this season, Alabama swept the Tigers in Tuscaloosa to end LSU’s 11-match winning streak in the series. The Crimson Tide connected for a .430 hitting percentage over the final three sets of a 3-1 triumph over South Carolina on Friday.
“Alabama is an awfully improved team, and they are coming in here with a much better record than in years past,” coach Fran Flory said. “After winning our first meeting in Tuscaloosa, they are going to come in here with a point to prove because they haven’t won at the PMAC in a while. We are aware of that, and we’ll be ready for that match. I think we will have a nice game plan put together, and we’ll be a lot more balanced offensively than we were when we played them at their place.”
LSU is coming off a 3-2 setback to preseason SEC favorite Tennessee where the Tigers racked up a season’s best 18 blocks. Khourtni Fears and Cati Leak posted career-highs with 10 and 7 stuffs, respectively.
TIGERS LOOK TO GET BACK IN WIN COLUMN: In Knoxville, Tenn., as the Tigers head into the homestretch of the 2012 regular season, they look to get back into the win column on Sunday afternoon as they head to the Regal Soccer Stadium in Knoxville to battle the 23rd-ranked Tennessee Lady Volunteers to wrap up their road weekend in SEC play.
The Tigers (6-6-4, 2-5-2 SEC) are ready to rebound from a 2-1 defeat at South Carolina on Friday night in which freshman Jade Kovacevic scored her second goal of the season in the 81st minute.
The Lady Volunteers (10-4-2, 5-3-1) are looking to bounce back from a loss of their own after suffering a 1-0 setback to Kentucky.
The Tigers have enjoyed tremendous success against the Lady Volunteers in recent years as they enter the match riding a five-game unbeaten streak with a 3-0-2 mark in the series dating back to the semifinal round of the 2008 Southeastern Conference soccer tournament.
The Lady Volunteers are led by a powerful offense and stifling defense as they have proven themselves as one of the SEC’s premier teams this fall.
While Tennessee has only surrendered eight goals to their opponents on the defensive end, they are led by a quartet of goal scorers with four goals on the year offensively in Kylie Bono, Amy Harrison, Iyana Moore and Hannah Wilkinson.
LSU CRUISES PAST Nicholls State, 9-0: LSU continued its winning ways during the fall campaign with a 9-0 victory over Nicholls State Friday at Tiger Park.
In the circle, the Tigers received six stellar innings from Meghan Patterson. The junior right-hander collected five strikeouts, while allowing only two hits.
LSU’s offense posted a three-run third inning fueled by RBI singles from Allison Falcon and Hailey Smith.
LSU struck for a quartet of runs during the fourth inning. Kellsi Kloss and Alex Boulet connected singles to put runners on the corners with no outs. Sandra Simmons cleared the bases with a two-run double into the left centerfield gap to make it 5-0.
Two batters later, Kailey McCasland blasted another RBI double off the right-field wall to plate Simmons.
The Tigers capped the frame with runs on a passed ball and ground out to push the advantage to 8-0.
Bell blasted a solo home run in the sixth inning and completed the 9-0 shutout.
with a scoreless inning of relief.
