BREC’s Magnolia Mound Plantation, 2161 Nicholson Drive, will host Creole Christmas from 3 p.m. to 6 p.m. Sunday, Dec. 9. Participants can celebrate the holiday season with a Creole flair. Flora show at library

Louisiana’s fall flowers—from roots to seeds, leaves to flowers—spring to life in an exhibit of original watercolor drawings by botanical artist Margaret Stones in Hill Memorial Library at LSU.

Late Bloomers: Fall Flowers from Margaret Stones’s Flora of Louisiana will run through Feb. 16, 2013. The exhibition is sponsored by LSU Libraries’ Special Collections.

Stones was originally commissioned in 1976 to create six watercolor drawings for LSU’s bicentennial celebration. Those original six drawings produced such an enthusiastic response that the project grew rapidly, generating support and funding from every area of the state.

Over a period of 20 years, Stones completed more than 200 drawings, creating a unique collection dedicated to the native plants of Louisiana. Lauded for both their scientific accuracy and extraordinary artistry, these drawings are accompanied by information about each plant written by LSU professor of botany Lowell Urbatsch, who collaborated with Stones on the project. The exhibition offers visitors a chance to learn more about the native plants, both common and rare, that are found in woodlands and swamps.

Stones’s drawings are part of the E. A. McIlhenny Natural History Collection that features examples of scientific illustration from the last five centuries. Also on display are works she created for Curtis’s Botanical Magazine and The Endemic Flora of Tasmania.

The library is open 10 a.m.-4 p.m., Monday through Friday, and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. on Saturdays. When classes are in session, the library is open Tuesday evenings until 8 p.m. During weekdays, parking for a nominal fee is available at the Visitors’ Center, Memorial Tower, and Mike the Tiger’s Habitat.

At Rosedown

Rosedown Plantation State Historic Site, 12501 La. 10, St. Francisville, will be ringing in the Christmas season on Saturday and Sunday, Dec. 15-16, with the 10th annual “Christmas at Rosedown” event. Throughout the weekend, visitors will see the Main House decorated in 19th-century style as site staff relate stories of Christmas traditions at Rosedown that were passed down through the Turnbull and Bowman families. Each day, costumed living history presenters from around the area will be displaying various 19th-century crafts demonstrations and activities. Also featured will be musicians and carolers.
