Youth News for Oct. 12, 2012

Family Road of Greater Baton Rouge, 323 E. Airport Drive, is offering the Wyman Teen Outreach Program to help students ages 12 to 18 develop healthy behaviors, life skills and a sense of purpose.

Participants are divided into clubs based on these age groupings: 12-13, 14, 15-16 and 17-18. Club members meet for an hour once a week and have opportunities to win gift cards and other prizes.

The curriculum includes values clarification, relationships, communication/assertiveness, influence, goal-setting, decision-making, human development and sexuality and community service learning.

Teens honored for integrity

Baker Masonic Lodge No. 441 has named high school students Alissa Phillips, Victoria Lewis, Derek Wooden, Kylie Bozeman and Katie Geren as Honesty and Integrity Award winners.

Phillips, a Zachary High School junior, is the daughter of Robert Marsh and Jennifer Phillips.

Lewis, a Central Private School junior, is the daughter of Steven and Ann Lewis.

Wooden, a Zachary High School senior, is the son of Len and Jeanette Wooden.

Bozeman, a Zachary High School junior, is the daughter of Rondon Bozeman and Donna Green.

Geren, a Central Private School senior, is the daughter of Rick and Lawanna Geren.

Leadership winners named

The LTG Troy H. Middleton Chapter of the Military Order of the World Wars has honored high school seniors Erin M. Carcel, Victor A. Gutierrez and Taylor E. Templet as the 2012 Youth Leadership Award winners.

During the Oct. 2 presentation at the City Club of Baton Rouge, Gutierrez, of Parkview Baptist High School in Baton Rouge, was accompanied by his mother, Barbara Gutierrez, and Taylor Templet, of St. Amant High School, was accompanied by her mother, Lisa Bates.

Carcel, of St. Michael High School in Baton Rouge, was unable to attend.

As chapter winners, the students went in June to the MOWW Youth Leadership and Patriotic Education Conference aboard the USS Yorktown in Charleston, S.C.

Chalmette art student wins

Patrick Burtchaell, of Chalmette, recently won the Tulane Day Poster Contest and a copy of Adobe Creative Suite 6. The theme of the contest was digitizing history.

Burtchaell, the son of Steve and Nancy Burtchaell, is an 11th-grade home school student and also a Level III media arts student at New Orleans Center for Creative Arts.
