Jennifer Fowler, business counselor for the Louisiana Business and Technology Center at LSU and the director of the LBTC’s LSU Student Incubator, earned the Certified Incubator Manager designation from the National Business Incubation Association. Certification is based training and coursework.
Shannon McCormick, international business consultant at the Louisiana Business and Technology Center, earned the designation of Certified International Business Counselor from NASBITE International, formerly known as the National Association of Small Business International Trade Educators. The designation gives her the credentials to work with Louisiana companies interested in exporting and tapping international markets.
In addition, the LBTC was designated by the National Business Incubation Association as an International Soft Landing Incubator because of the services offered to international companies to help them establish operations in the United States.
Simone Ginn, of Wal-Mart Pharmacy of Baton Rouge, was named Pharmacist of the Year by the Louisiana Pharmacists Association recognizing her as an outstanding representative of pharmacy who has made significant contributions to the profession.
Sudipta Sarangi, the Gulf Coast Coca-Cola Bottling Co. Inc. Distinguished Professor of Business Administration and professor in the LSU Department of Economics, served as a guest editor of the September 2012 special issue of Mathematical Social Sciences, an international journal of economics, psychology, political sciences, sociology and other social sciences. Sarangi edited the issue along with Francis Bloch, a professor of economics at Ecole Polytechnique in Paris.
The Capital Area Corporate Recycling Council recently received certification to safely manage and recycle electronics according to standards set by the Responsible Recycling Practices program. The program is the leading standard for the international electronics recycling industry. Certification was achieved after nine months of adhering to industry standards set by the R2 program.
The Baton Rouge Area Chamber received a silver award for its 2010 annual report, “The Making of a Regional Rock Star,” in the International Economic Development Council’s Excellence in Economic Development awards competition. The report was produced in partnership with Object 9 and recapped achievements from BRAC’s five-year economic development campaign.
Christopher P. Knotts, a licensed civil engineer with the Louisiana Department of Natural Resources, was named the 2012 Outstanding Civil Engineer by the Louisiana section of the American Society of Civil Engineers.
Kenny Nguyen, chief executive officer of Big Fish Presentations, placed second at the Global Student Entrepreneur Award Competition in Detroit from among 1,500 nominees. The GSEA Regional Competition is held in 25 countries. Big Fish, which has grown from four employees to 11 in less than a year, specializes in design and development of presentations, video commercials and presentation consulting. In the future, Big Fish plans to expand into event and conference planning.
Nancy Rabalais, LSU adjunct professor in the School of the Coast & Environment and director of the Louisiana Universities Marine Consortium, has been awarded the MacArthur Fellowship by The John D. and Catherine T. MacArthur Foundation.
The foundation supports creative people and effective institutions committed to “building a more just, verdant and peaceful world.”
As a marine ecologist, Rabalais was selected for “documenting the environmental and economic consequences of hypoxic zones in the Gulf of Mexico and … strategies for restoring the degraded waters of the Gulf and the Mississippi River basin.”
MacArthur Fellowship recipients receive $500,000 in no-strings-attached support over the next five years. Rabalais said she will put the funds into the research, education and outreach she conducts with her colleagues.
Cathy Gautreaux, executive director of the Louisiana Motor Transport Association, has been presented the American Trucking Associations’ President’s Trucking Association Executives Council Leadership Award.
Gautreaux was honored for her leadership, dedication and achievements on behalf of the trucking industry in Louisiana.
The Big Cajun II Generating Station in New Roads has received Voluntary Protection Program Star status from the U.S. Department of Labor’s Occupational Safety and Health Administration for achieving the highest level of workplace health and safety.
Greater New Orleans Inc. and the Baton Rouge Area Chamber announced that the Southeast Super-Region Committee was awarded a gold medal from the International Economic Development Council for “Regionalism and Cross-border Collaboration.”
The SRC, made up of GNO Inc. and BRAC board members, works to foster cooperation for mutual benefit between the Baton Rouge area and greater New Orleans regions. Current issues include education reform; international trade; inter-regional transportation; airport and flight connectivity; coastal restoration; and innovation and entrepreneurship.
The Louisiana Cultural Economy Foundation is presenting New Orleans Mayor Mitch J. Landrieu with its Lifetime Cultural Economy Leadership Award and Jennifer Eplett Reilly, of Baton Rouge, with its 2012 Cultural Economy Hero Award.
As lieutenant governor, Landrieu launched a Cultural Economy Initiative to grow jobs through culture, music, food, film and other arts.
Eplett Reilly served as LCEF’s first board president 2005-2007 and as a board member until 2011. Her vision was integral in the creation of LCEF and its direction, shedding light on the connection between culture and the economic health of Louisiana, the organization said.
Receiving awards from the local area for outstanding achievement as a result of funds they received are Sarah Dunn, Visual Arts/Mixed Media, Orleans Parish, Cultural Innovation Award; Chef Reese Williams, Culinary Arts, St. Francisville, Economic Impact Award; and Cherice Harrison-Nelson, Traditional Culture Bearer/Mardi Gras Indian, Orleans Parish, Cultural Impact Award.
