Algiers teenager found dead Monday

Algiers — A 17-year-old boy was found dead a few yards from his home late Monday night, and New Orleans police are looking for a motive or suspect in the incident.

Byron Anthony was found lying near Maumas Avenue and Jennifer Court at about 10 p.m. according to police.

Anthony appeared to have a gunshot wound to the head. Police located a handgun and narcotics at the scene.

Anthony’s family could not be reached for comment on Tuesday. Anyone with information can contact Crimestoppers at 504.822.1111.

Fatal crash may have been hit-and-run

New Orleans — Police now believe an accident that killed a Gulfport man and injured another Sunday morning may have been the result of a hit-and-run, and they are seeking the public’s help in identifying the responsible driver.

The accident was reported shortly after 4 a.m. Sunday near the Michoud Boulevard exit on Interstate 10. William Whobrey, 44, died after his vehicle flipped several times after striking a guardrail.

Whobrey died while trapped inside the vehicle, while the 36-year-old driver was ejected from the vehicle and remains in stable condition.

Police believe the victim’s vehicle was struck on the rear bumper by a light-colored truck or SUV that then fled.

Police ask anyone with information on the accident to contact fatality investigator Anthony Pontiff at (504) 658-6237.

Rape count dropped against cab driver

Harvey- A cab driver accused of rape by New Orleans police last week is no longer being investigated in connection with that incident by the Jefferson Parish Sheriff’s Office, and kidnapping charges against him in New Orleans have been dropped.

Iqbal Pervez, 60, had been accused of kidnapping a woman on Sept. 29 in New Orleans, then raping her at his Metairie apartment. However, a day after Pervez was arraigned on the kidnapping charge in New Orleans, he had all charges against him dropped.

According to Col. John Fortunato, a sheriff’s spokesman, authorities found problems with the account of the incident provided by the alleged victim and decided not to pursue rape charges.

The kidnapping charges were subsequently dropped by the Orleans Parish District Attorney’s Office.

The woman had told New Orleans police she was placed in the cab while intoxicated and passed out. She said when she awoke, a man was sexually assaulting her. New Orleans police tracked down Pervez through a number in the woman’s wireless phone.

Man shot in arm while sitting in car

New Orleans - A New Orleans man reported being shot in the arm while sitting in his car on Monday afternoon.

The incident was reported at Laperouse Street and North Roman in the police’s First District. The victim said he was sitting in his vehicle at about 2:15 p.m. when an unidentified man walked up to him and shot him in the arm.

The victim drove himself to a local hospital.

Possible robbery turns into shooting

New Orleans- A 44-year-old man is in serious condition at a New Orleans hospital after he was shot several times during a possible robbery Tuesday morning.

Police say the incident happened shortly before 1:26 a.m. in the 1500 block of Bienville Street. Officers were called out to investigate a possible armed robbery, and they found the victim with multiple gunshot wounds to the chest.

The victim was taken to a local hospital where he was listed in critical condition.

LSU student booked on shooting count

Baton Rouge — An LSU student was booked with attempted first-degree murder after authorities say she shot at her mother in New Orleans before driving back to campus.

Nicole Lea Boover, 19, of Metairie, was arrested by LSU Police on Monday after her stepfather reported she fired multiple shots at her mother during an argument earlier that day.

Boover also was booked with marijuana possession.

LSU Police said they were contacted by Boover’s stepfather at about 6:30 a.m. He told authorities his stepdaughter was on her way back to LSU with a male friend and the girl had shot at her mother earlier that morning.

The mother was not wounded.

After confirming that information with New Orleans police, LSU Police arrested Boover without incident at her dorm on South Campus Drive.

During the arrest police also searched Boover’s room and vehicle and located marijuana in both locations, they said.
