The Community Sisterhood’s Diabetes Awareness program was held Sept. 30 at the Geismar Community Center.
The program was part of a partnership between First Pilgrim Calvary Baptist Church and Progressive Baptist Church.
The goal of the program was to address the growing health effects of diabetes within the community, a news release from the Community Sisterhood states.
The group used a program designed by the American Diabetes Association to provide information to 56 residents in attendance.
Kathleen Bodean, a registered nurse and certified diabetic educator with St. Elizabeth Physicians, talked about how to care for both Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes.
The Community Sisterhood provided snacks geared toward a diabetic diet.
Marcia Darville demonstrated the importance of portion control when dining out and Lamonica Solomon led the audience in an interactive game to help determine the carbohydrate contents in some common household foods.
Attendees were given a copy of “Take Charge of Your Diabetes” donated by Louisiana Department of Health and Hospital Chronic Disease section.
Kingdom Fitness owner Gerolin Johnson demonstrated different types of low-impact exercise routines.
