LSU golfers tied for David Toms tourney lead

Led by back-to-back rounds of 1-over par 73 by Andrew Presley, the 12th-ranked LSU men's golf team finished tied for the lead Saturday at the fourth annual David Toms Intercollegiate at The University Club.

With the University Club playing to a difficult 7,578 yards for the weekend, the Tigers followed a score at 7-over par 295 in the morning round with a 14-over par 302 in the afternoon round to join South Alabama with a six-shot lead over Louisiana Tech.

Presley fired back-to-back rounds of 1-over 73 to finish one shot off the pace in a tie for third place at 2-over 146.

South Alabama's Lane Hulse and Mississippi State's Chad Ramey had 1-over par 145s to take the 36-hole lead over Presley with Sunday's final round to determine this year's champion.

"It was a little bit of a disappointing day. The golf course was very challenging today, but I don't feel like the level of our play was where it needed to be," LSU coach Chuck Winstead said. "It looks like it is to be even more challenging tomorrow with the forecast showing strong winds and cooler temperatures in the final round. It's certainly going to make a tough course play even tougher for the field.

"We need to come out and be tough-minded and patient. That will be needed for us to play a tough course on a tough day like we expect tomorrow. We expect a competitive final round."

Women's golf

GAHM TIED FOR 17TH: In Athens, Ga., Lindsay Gahm posted an even-par round of 72 in the second round Saturday of the Liz Murphey NCAA Fall Preview and is in position for a top 10 finish. Gahm, whose best finish a year ago was a tie for 17th, posted a two birdie-two bogey round to post a 72 to go with Friday's 73 to stand at 1-over 145 after 36 holes.

Gahm is tied for 10th in the individual competition. Marta Sanz of Auburn enters the final round at 4-under 140 (71-69) for the overall lead.

Madelene Sagstrom and Nadine Dreher both posted 2-over 74s on the day. Sagstrom, the sophomore from Sweden, is at 3-over 147 (73-74) and is in a group tied for 22nd.

The Lady Tigers improved their team score from the first day by five shots, going from 305 to 300 and stands at 605 and 17th place after two rounds. Auburn is the leader at 4-over 580 (287-293), five shots clear of Alabama at 9-over 585 (296-289).

Women's tennis

burns, Hudson advance at AT RICE INVITATIONAL: In Houston, LSU will see action in the final rounds of flights in both singles and doubles.

Senior Kaitlin Burns advanced to the final round of singles Flight 2 after a 6-1, 7-5 victory over Stephanie Nguyen of Rice. She will take on another Rice competitor Sunday as she battles Kim Anicete for the win.

Newcomer Caroline Hudson, competing alongside Klaudia Gawlik of McNeese, will compete in the final round of doubles Flight 3 as they take on Celia Fraser and Gabriella Jansson of Huouston.

The pair defeated Katy Collins and Bérénice Van den Bergh of Texas State 8-3 in the second round.

"This was a great day for Tiger tennis," coach Julia S. Sell said. "We made a lot of positive strides in our singles play and really started to feel confident in our game styles. Kaitlin Burns picked up another quality win today over a very good player. She is really emerging as a leader on our team because of her strong work ethic and attitude."

Men's basketball

TEAM TO PLAY EXHIBITION GAME: LSU will play Arkansas-Monticello in an exhibition game at the Pete Maravich Assembly Center at 7 p.m. Nov. 5.

The contest will be four days before the start of the regular season and the first for new coach Johnny Jones on Nov. 9 against UC-Santa Barbara.

In the exhibition game, LSU will play Arkansas-Monticello in the first exhibition game played in the Maravich Center since before the 2007-08 season.

Volleyball

LSU Faces South Carolina: LSU continues its four-game homestand with a Sunday matinée versus South Carolina. First serve is 1 p.m. at the Maravich Center.

LSU (6-10, 2-5 SEC) has a 19-14 series advantage over South Carolina (13-5, 2-5). Earlier this season, the Gamecocks overcame a 2-1 deficit to defeat the Tigers in five sets and end LSU's seven-match winning streak in the series.

Juliette Thévenin ripped a match-high 22 kills during the first meeting and has averaged 4.05 kills per set to rank third in the SEC.

Defensively, Paige Wheeler collected 18 digs and her 3.97 scoops per set average checks in at eighth place on the SEC leaderboard.

"Our players have truly needed to hit the restart button, and that's what we allowed them to do after the Georgia match," head coach Fran Flory said. "We were physically tired and mentally fatigued. The extra time off has allowed the players to refocus and recommit. By that doing that, I believe we'll play with a different level of intensity for tomorrow's match."

Soccer

TIGERS CONTINUE SEC PLAY WITH VANDERBILT: LSU looks to bounce back from a 2-0 loss to Florida on Friday when they welcome Vanderbilt on Sunday at 1:05 p.m. at the LSU Soccer Stadium.

Following an unbeaten weekend on the road in SEC play, the Tigers (5-5-4, 1-4-2 SEC) dropped their 2-0 decision to the Gators.

The Commodores (5-4-5, 2-1-4) are riding a three-game SEC unbeaten streak heading into the match after earning a thrilling 3-2 double overtime win at Arkansas on Friday night to start their road trip.
