A few minutes with ... New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu

New Orleans Mayor Mitch Landrieu gives his take on what it’s like to be the city’s No. 1 sports fan:

As mayor of New Orleans, when the Saints lose, do you take it personally?

I take it very personally. This city rallies around our boys every Sunday. I know they’re working hard, but the Who Dat Nation wants to see some Ws.

Do you make most home games? If so, do you wear a jersey, a suit or something in between?

I make as many as I can. When I’m in the Dome, I’m always sporting black and gold.

What kind of athlete were you growing up?

A good one. When I showed up for a game, I came to win. Naturally, I’m a competitive person.

How active are you today? Do you have a workout regimen?

I like to stay as active as I can. Whenever I can fit something into the schedule, I’ll do it. I still enjoy getting on the tennis court. And running of course is a passion. Last year I ran the half marathon in Chicago and the Rock n Roll Marathon here in New Orleans. My biggest accomplishment though was crossing the finish line in the New York Marathon.

Who was your favorite athlete and/or team when you were growing up?

Like most New Orleanians, I have an unconditional love for the Saints.

Who is your favorite current athlete/and or team?

Hands down, my favorite athlete is Drew Brees. But you know I’m in and I’ve got love for the Hornets, too. I’m definitely excited about their upcoming season and their future in New Orleans.

If you could swap places with any athlete, current or past, for a day, who would it be and why?

Drew Brees. I really respect the guy as a leader on and off the field. And who wouldn’t want to have a Super Bowl title and the NFL single-season passing record under their belt?

You’re a former Jesuit Blue Jay. When are they ever going to win a state football championship again?

Hopefully, soon. They’re undefeated this year. This might be the Blue Jays’ year.

What’s the best perk about being the mayor of the Super Bowl city?

I haven’t found out yet. But our team is working hard to prepare for the big game.

Do you have the power to proclaim the Saints will be playing in it, no matter what their final record is?

Yes, I have no doubt Super Bowl XLVII will be a home game for the Saints this year.
