BR church to screen Chittister webcast

Sister Joan Chittister, of Erie, Pa., will be featured in a Trinity Institute webcast conference on making the vital connection between contemplation and social action.

Conference publicity quotes Chittister from her book “The Radical Christian Life: A Year with Saint Benedict.”

“Our task is now to be radical Christian communities in the here and now, not fossils of a bygone reality, not leftovers from an earlier golden age,” she says. “Now we need new wisdom and a new kind of struggle to determine what we must be and do in the midst of these changing times. The question is then: What does it mean to be a radical Christian community in times such as these?”

The conference, Nov. 9 and 10, will be presented at Trinity Church in New York City and simultaneously be webcast to partner sites, including the St. James Center for Spiritual Formation, a ministry of St. James Episcopal Church, in downtown Baton Rouge.

Slidell church to add radio station by 2013

New Horizon Calvary Chapel in Slidell has been awarded a license by the Federal Communications Commission for a full-power radio station. WOTB will broadcast on 88.7 FM by the summer of 2013, church leaders announced in an email.

“We consider it both a privilege as well as a great responsibility to be the overseers of such an incredibly powerful and effective method of spreading the gospel of Jesus Christ and the whole counsel of God’s word through diverse Bible teaching and contemporary Christian music,” said the church’s pastor, the Rev. John Raymond.

The new station will be called “The Bridge,” the former name of a Baton Rouge station until Educational Media Foundation acquired it from Bethany World Prayer Center and changed the name to K-LOVE years ago. The foundation agreed to use of the name and also donated $50,000 in station equipment, Raymond said.

The new station, housed inside New Horizon’s 27,000-square-foot facility at 3401 Pontchartrain Drive in Slidell, will broadcast at FCC’s maximum allowable 100,000 watt signal, making it the most powerful Christian Radio Station in Southeast Louisiana and the Mississippi Gulf Coast reaching potentially 2,000,000 listeners or more, Raymond said.

He added that he expects to partner with other churches in the region to create programming for the station.
