To mark the 30th anniversary of Banned Books Week, the University of Louisiana at Lafayette has scheduled “Banned Books Read-Out,” short readings from banned or challenged books at 2 p.m. Wednesday in front of the Edith Garland Dupré Library.
The event celebrates the freedom to read books and the right to access them without censorship.
Students, faculty and staff will read aloud short passages from banned or challenged books, and books will be available for those who would like to select and read a passage aloud. Participants may also bring their own banned material to read aloud.
In case of inclement weather, the Read-Out will move to the first floor of Dupré Library near Jazzman’s Café.
The United Way of Acadiana is accepting proposals from nonprofit agencies in Acadia, Lafayette, St. Martin and Vermilion parishes for its Plan of Action for Community Transformation grant program.
The program seeks projects focused in three areas: education, earnings (helping community members become financially stable) and essentials (helping others meet their basic living needs).
Free proposal workshops begin at 9 a.m. Thursday at the United Way of Acadiana, 215 E. Pinhook Road, Lafayette. For future workshop dates and a proposal application, visit: http://www.UnitedWayofAcadiana.org. The deadline for submissions is noon Oct. 31.
The public can learn more about a study and preservation of historic bridges in Louisiana at 7 p.m. Wednesday at the South Regional Library, 6101 Johnston St.
The state Department of Transportation and Development, in coordination with the Louisiana State Historic Preservation Office and the Federal Highway Administration, commissioned a project to study the historic bridges and develop a process to manage and preserve them.
The consulting firm Mead & Hunt will assist with the project and conduct research on the history of the bridges, field survey a select number of bridges, and provide recommendations for listing the bridges in the National Register of Historic Places.
The Mark Whitfield Quartet takes the stage at 7:30 p.m. Friday as part of the Acadiana Center for the Arts “Jazz @ the Center” series.
The center’s Moncus Theater transforms into an intimate New York City style jazz club with table seating and cocktail service for the series.

“Real Men Wear Pink” is a new calendar produced by Women’s & Children’s Hospital’s Elaine M. Junca Women’s Imaging Centre that benefits breast cancer services offered through Miles Perret Cancer Services.
The 15-month calendar is $20.
