Inmate dies after complaining of chest pains

An inmate at the Lafayette Parish Correctional Center died Thursday at University Medical Center, where he had been taken for a complaint of chest pains, according to the Lafayette Parish Sheriff’s Office.

Scott Hewel, 53, of Scott, was booked Monday and was awaiting extradition on a warrant out of Florida for communication fraud, Sheriff’s Office spokesman Capt. Kip Judice said.

Hewel was taken to UMC at 10:50 a.m. Thursday after he complained of chest pains and died at the hospital at 3:08 p.m., according to the Sheriff’s Office.

The cause of death is under investigation.
