A WALK/RUN TO REMEMBER, Alzheimer’s Services of the Capital Area — Teri Brantley, (225) 334-7494: Alzheimer’s Services will hold its annual Walk/Run to Remember 5K on Oct. 20 at the LSU Old Front Nine. This is the group’s largest awareness event which raises money for many programs and services which support individuals affected with Alzheimer’s disease and dementia. About 8,000 people participant in the Walk/Run, and volunteers are needed to assist in putting it on. Enjoy a fun-filled morning, jambalaya, drinks and a live band while participants enjoy a Children’s Village with activities for kids and a Memory Market exhibitor area. Held in downtown Baton Rouge on Thursday, the event features live music, jambalaya and lots of fun. SWAMP HAUNTED HOUSES, BREC’s Bluebonnet Swamp and Nature Center — Erin O’Neill, (225) 272-9200, ext. 143, or volunteer@brec.org: This Halloween, volunteer with a great family-friendly event at the Bluebonnet Swamp Nature Center. People are needed to sit at trail stations with staff members and hand out candy to visitors, and help direct visitors from the parking lot to the trails and various other stations. Volunteers will also help at the face-painting station and monitor “Creepy Cavern” and “Animal Morgue” rooms. The event will be from 7 p.m. to 9:30 p.m. Friday and Oct. 19 and Oct. 26. SUPPORT GROUP FACILITATORS NEEDED, Alzheimer’s Services — Katherine Schillings, (225) 334-7494: Alzheimer’s Services needs dedicated individuals to facilitate the exchange of information and support among group participants. Individuals must have knowledge or willingness to learn about Alzheimer’s disease and its impact on families, be comfortable with expression of emotion, and have strong listening skills, a nonjudgmental attitude and a sense of humor. Support groups typically meet for one hour, once a month, in various locations.
VOLUNTEER COACHES WANTED, The Recreation and Parks Commission for the Parish of East Baton Rouge (BREC) — Erin O’Neill, (225) 272-9200, ext. 143, or volunteer@brec.org: BREC’s Therapeutics Department is offering an inclusive basketball league to children in the community with disabilities. Interactive and energized coaches and mentors are needed to help teams of children with disabilities get organized and warm up for the basketball season. Assistants will handle general coaching duties and also help with setup and cleanup of equipment. Those with experience helping with children are particularly wanted. The league begins Saturday and ends Nov. 17. Contact Neill for more information.
