Red Stick Ex-POWs hear about Gálvez

Clifford Normand, registrar of the Louisiana Sons of the American Revolution, spoke on Bernardo de Gálvez and the Spanish contributions to the American Revolution to the Red Stick Chapter of the American Ex-Prisoners of War on Sept. 11 at Hollywood Casino.

Normand described how in 1779, Spain governed portions of Louisiana and declared war against Britain, which also owned lands east of the Mississippi River except for the Isle of Orleans. He described how Gálvez, with the aid of the local militias, defeated the British at Fort Bute, on Bayou Manchac; Baton Rouge; Natchez, Miss.; Mobile, Ala.; and Pensacola, Fla.

It was noted that members Alyne Gray and Margie Copeland had died since their last meeting and noted the gifts the chapter received in Gray’s memory.

Members decided to start meeting on the first Tuesday of the month. The next meeting will be at 11 a.m. Oct. 1 at Hollywood Casino.

Feliciana UDC sees battle re-enactment

The Feliciana Chapter of the United Daughters of the Confederacy attended a re-enactment of the Battle of Bayou Sara on Sept. 8 at the Audubon State Historic Site.

Members had tea and homemade gingerbread cookies on the front steps of Oakley House, made bath salts and watched many programs.

Caleb Carter received the Louisiana Division Scholarship to help pay for college books from his sister, Vice President Christina Duncan.

W. Florida Rebellion topic for LSU retirees

Historian Sam Hyde spoke about the Florida parishes’ 1810 rebellion to the LSU Faculty and Staff Retirees Club on Sept. 10. Never part of the Louisiana Purchase, the republic was coveted for its strategic location.

Terril Faul previewed the upcoming FACES lab talk. Bill Cochran presented the annual audit. Ed Bosworth reported on the bank account. Donna Day gave an update on new members. Mary McGehee said she will continue the “Adopt-A-Senior” program at the Baton Rouge Food Bank. Jerald Juneau reminded members of the benefits of the group’s parent organization, the Louisiana Retired Teachers Association.
