Grand jury indicts 4 men in slaying of Clinton man, 42

An East Feliciana Parish grand jury indicted four men Tuesday on first-degree murder charges in the death of a man who walked into a confrontation in his neighborhood Aug. 8.

The grand jury returned the indictments against Jerald Matthews, 26, 6111 Dennis Mack Lane, Ethel; Quinton Loyell, 30, 10646 Mallie Jefferson Lane, Clinton; Eric Keller, 26, 10722 Johnson St., Clinton; and Cordero Morgan, 25, 2136 N. Lobdell Drive, Baton Rouge, 20th Judicial District Attorney Sam D’Aquilla said in a news release.

Clinton police said Isaac Simmons, 42, of Clinton, was hit and killed by a bullet as he walked along a street where a drug deal, in which he was not involved, turned into an armed robbery attempt and shooting.

Matthews and Morgan are accused of traveling from Baton Rouge to Clinton to buy cocaine from Loyell and Keller, Clinton Police Chief Eddie Stewart said.

Keller is scheduled to appear in court Oct. 9, while the other three are expected to appear for arraignment Oct. 16, the news release says.
