The Acadian-style cottage at 21 Zion in Kenner’s Woodlake Subdivision has plenty of wow factor.
Its custom-designed pool: wow!
Storage space up down and all around: wow!
Its private exit off its master suite which opens to a completely private hot tub area: wow!
“We’re out here every night just to relax and work out the kinks from the day,” declared John Hinds, the owner with his wife Crystal, of this magnificent home.
The three-story house in an amazing location backs right up to the levee and its third floor offers unobstructed views of Lake Pontchartrain. A jogging/biking/walking train snakes behind the house, offering easy access to exercise.
The house opens into a foyer with a living room on its right and a dining room on its left giving easy access to its kitchen. It has sparkling white woodwork and pine floors and its view invites guests into the soaring ceilinged great room. It’s easy to catch a drink from the bar and wander out onto the brick patio complete with custom-designed heated swimming pool, its own private bath/changing room and outdoor shower.
“This is where we live,’’ exclaimed Crystal. “I relax in the hammock and when it gets a little warm, I can go for a swim.”
Added John: “This whole area is wired for gas so cooking and crawfish boiling are easy. Plus, we have solar lighting and an irrigation system on a timer which makes for easy maintenance.” The lush landscaping was accomplished by Daly Sublette.
The master suite is on the first floor, a boon for those step-averse among us. Besides opening onto its private patio cum hot tub, it contains two walk-in closets. It also has an oversize shower, Jacuzzi tub, and – luxury of luxuries, especially in the wintertime – heated towel racks. There is also another first-floor bedroom.
The house’s kitchen offers every kind of luxury imaginable: restaurant-style gas stove, side-by-side built-in refrigerator freezer and built-in microwave. It even has a pull-out television artfully hidden behind one of its cabinets. Its sink is deep, deep with no divider and storage, storage, storage abounds for the cooks who need plenty of space for pots, pans and clean-up. A laundry room is through a door at one end.
The magnificent great room just off the kitchen offers plenty of space for entertaining and its two-story soaring ceilings give it a feeling of real spaciousness. Up the staircase is an upper den for youngsters who want to watch television and play video games – or possibly, do homework.
Three bedrooms on the second floor housed the couple’s children. Two masculine-decorated rooms separated by a jack-and-jill bath (a shared shower, but separate commodes and basins) gave the boys plenty of space and privacy. A feminine suite with its own Jacuzzi tub was renovated to accommodate their daughter.
A French Quarter-style winding staircase leads to the third floor den with its bank of windows and views of the lake.
“This could be used as an office,” noted Michele Pietri Branigan, the listing agent with Latter & Blum, or it could be a game room because its blackout curtains make it perfect for video games.”
Some very attractive features of the homes are probably those you can’t even see: the house has four air conditioning and heating units, making the closing off of areas not in use easy to do. It also has tons and tons of storage. Bedrooms have walk-in closets, bathrooms have linen storage and the three walk-in attics are easily accessible for more storage space.
With all these fabulous features, why are the Hinds leaving?
“It’s just the two of us now,” Crystal explained, “and we don’t really need all this space.’’
Which makes this house ready for someone else who does need plenty of space and storage in an energy-efficient home.
