Advocate staff report

Sixth-grade English and language arts teachers at Hammond Westside Montessori are focusing on Accelerated Reader, an online program in which students are assigned to read books, keep journals on what they have read and take tests on the books that they read.

The students in Tongia Keith’s sixth-grade class finished their first class novel, “Hiroshima” by Laurence Yep on Sept. 7. Every student was assigned to take a test on “Hiroshima,” and almost every student in all three classes passed the AR test, school officials said.

Students have started their second class novel, “Sadako.”
