BAKER — Citizens and community leaders participating in an economic development program plan a Thursday meeting to discuss ways to improve the city’s school system.
The 6 p.m. meeting will be in the Baker Municipal Auditorium on Groom Road.
Baker is participating this year in Louisiana Development Ready Communities program sponsored by Louisiana Economic Development, a state agency.
Communities in the program develop written plans to address education, work force development, infrastructure, leadership and marketing.
Mayor Harold Rideau said residents and business people in Baker have been encouraged to participate in an online community survey.
“Based on the results of the survey, education is our top priority. It’s an issue we need to address,” Rideau said.
The city split from the East Baton Rouge Parish school system in July 2003. Three of its five schools received F grades for their 2011 school performance, and the other two received D grades.
“As mayor, I want to see us work together — the Chamber of Commerce, community, government and the schools — for the good of our children,” Rideau said.
