Titanic tickets go on sale; Listening Room season outlined

Tickets are on sale for Titanic the Musical, set for 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Oct. 10, at the LSU Union Theater, Raphael Semmes Drive on campus. The musical won five Tony Awards in 1997. The production is part of the theater’s Great Performances series. Also, tickets are on sale for MatheMagic!, featuring Bradley Fields, at 7:30 p.m. Oct. 3, also in the Union Theater. The program is part of the theater’s Family Hour Series and incorporates magic, storytelling and comedy to engage children in math skills in problem-solving. Performances canceled

Due to the threats and delay of Hurricane Isaac, Swine Palace has chosen to cancel the two preview performances of its upcoming production, A Free Man of Color. These include the Wednesday, Sept. 19 pay-what-you-can performance and the Thursday, Sept. 20 sneak preview. A Free Man of Color will open at 7:30 p.m. Friday, Sept. 21, in the Claude L. Shaver Theatre in the LSU Music and Dramatic Arts Building, Dalrymple Drive on campus. Lt. Gov. Jay Dardenne and LSU Provost Stuart Bell will present a special introduction to the performance. Evening performances of A Free Man of Color will take place at 7:30 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 22, and Tuesday through Friday, Sept. 25-28. Matinee performances will be at 2 p.m. Sundays, Sept. 23 and 30. Listening Room list

The Arts Council of Greater Baton Rouge’s 2012-13 season of Listening Room jazz concerts will begin at 7:30 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 12, with alto saxophonist Wess “Warmdaddy” Anderson in the Hartley/Vey Studio Theatre in the Shaw Center for the Arts, 100 Lafayette St. Other scheduled concerts in the series are:

Sinfonietta tickets

Tickets are on sale for the Louisiana Sinfonietta’s opening concert for the 2012-13 season, set for 2 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 23, in the LSU School of Music Recital Hall, Dalrymple Drive, on campus. The concert also kicks off the Sinfonietta’s 30th anniversary season. Featured soloists will be pianist Maria Asteriadou, trombonist John Metcalf, violinist Espen Lilleslatten and trumpeters James West and Brian Shaw. The program also will mark the world premiere of Sinfonietta Director and Conductor Dinos Constantinides’ composition “Piano Concerto No. 2.” Also, Constance Navratil will host broadcasts of recorded Sinfonietta concerts at 9 p.m. Sundays on WRKF 89.3 in September. New artist members

Baton Rouge Gallery announces its annual call for new artist members. As a cooperative gallery, the existing artist membership makes artistic decisions. Currently, the gallery’s artist membership is made up of more than 50 professional artists ranging in media including fiber, print, drawing, glass, sculpture, painting and photography. At the Union Gallery

The exhibit Ancient Marks: The Sacred Origins of Tattoos and Body Marking will open Saturday, Sept. 15, at the LSU Student Union Gallery, Raphael Semmes Drive on campus. The show will run through Sunday, Nov. 4, and features photographs from ethnographic photographer Chris Rainier’s book Ancient Marks , historical tattoo tools from the collection of anthropologist Lars Krutak, as well as contemporary Louisiana tattoo artists’ collections. Krutak will present a lecture in conjunction with the program at 6 p.m. Thursday, Oct. 4, in the union’s Atchafalaya Room, and there also will be a showcase of southern Louisiana tattoo artists at a later date. A reception for an exhibit featuring artwork by muralists working with the BR Walls Project has been rescheduled for 6-8:30 p.m. Thursday, Sept. 13, at Kress Gallery, Third and Main streets. Featured artists are John Wax, Katie Knoeringer and Michael Secor. The reception initially was scheduled for Aug. 30 but was postponed because of Hurricane Isaac.

The annual Natchez Festival of Music’s Musical Tour of Homes in Natchez, Miss., is set for 2-5 p.m. Sunday, Sept. 16. Homes will be announced later. Tickets are $25. River Road deadline

The deadline is Monday, Sept. 17, for entries to the 43rd annual River Road Show, sponsored by the Louisiana Art and Artists’ Guild. The show will run from Dec. 3 to Jan. 30, 2013, in the Louisiana State Archives, 3851 Essen Lane. The show is a national juried competition. New gallery open

Louis Deangelo Gallery, 16645 Highland Road, is a new art venue featuring work by local abstract artist Lou Deangelo and showcasing work by more than a dozen regional artists in various media, including Tony Mose, Billie Bourgeois, Carol Arabie and Carol Creel. Call for artists

Nov. 30 is the deadline for entries to the 2013 Brush With Burden Juried Art Show. Last year’s show drew more than 400 visitors. All media are accepted. The theme should be inspired by the landscape, structures, flora and fauna of The Burden Center, 4560 Essen Lane. New for 2013 is a Special Award for outdoor sculpture. Turner in Atlanta

Baton Rouge visual artist Christopher Turner will make his second appearance on digital billboards in the Billboard Art Project in Atlanta, Ga., from Saturday, Sept. 29, through Friday, Oct. 26. Earlier this year, Turner’s Tranquility and Pure Emotions collections were featured in Albany, N.Y. Turner’s painting “Live At the Square,” featuring one of the downtown trolley cars in support of Baton Rouge public transportation system, CATS, will be displayed on billboards in Atlanta. Golden Pond tickets

Tickets are on sale for the Eunice Players Theatre’s production of Ernest Thompson’s On Golden Pond, which opens with a dinner theater performance at 6 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 19, at Ruby’s Restaurant, next door to the theater, 221 S. At the Hilliard

The exhibit, Kenn Kotara: Viaticus, will open Saturday, Sept. 15, at the Paul and Lulu Hilliard University Art Museum, 715 St. Mary Blvd., Lafayette. Viaticus, meaning, “pertaining to a journey,” consists of 18 ceramic boxes that mimic the pattern of footprints in an undulating line. Native Louisiana plants grow through foot-shaped cutouts on the upper side of each of the ceramic containers. Also, artist Marjorie Brown Pierson will speak at 10 a.m. Friday, Sept. 14, at the museum about her photographs documenting the wetlands.
