The Pointe Coupee Parish Library invites the public to attend “Willa Cather Speaks,” a one-woman show featuring nationally acclaimed author and scholar Betty Jean Steinshouer.
Steinshouer portrays Pulitzer Prize-winning author Willa Cather, author of the 1927 novel “Death Comes for the Archbishop.”
The show will take place at 6 p.m. Aug. 30 at the Pointe Coupee Parish Library.
Steinshouer’s performance culminates the community-wide reading of Cather’s novel. For more information, call Randy Harelson at (225) 240-3421.
City Councilwoman Ray Helen Lawrence will host a town hall meeting at 6 p.m., Aug. 30, at the West Baton Rouge Library in Port Allen.
Topics for discussion include blue tarps, financial responsibilities for the uninsured and successions for repair grant information from the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

The West Baton Rouge Parish Library’s Lego Club plans to meet at 1:15 p.m. Saturday at the library in Port Allen.
Club membership, which is free, is open to children 3 to 12 years of age and their families.

In August, the New Roads Multi-Use Center will host two barrel race competitions.
The first, the National Barrel Race Competition, will take place at 9 a.m. Aug. 25. The facility will host the Baton Rouge Barrel Race Competition at 9 a.m. Aug. 26. Both events are free to the public.
The center is located at 1400 Major Parkway in New Roads.
The Casting for a Cure Bass Fishing Tournament 2012 & Auction will take place on Aug. 25 on Morrison Parkway in New Roads.
The tournament is an annual fundraiser for cancer research.

On Aug. 1, the Plaquemine Elks Lodge No. 1398 made a $1,000 donation to Our Lady of the Lake Children’s Hospital.
The lodge raised the money during its May 5 Elks Crawfish Shootout Contest. The lodge announced its next crawfish shootout benefit will be held May 4 at Plaquemine Water Front Park. For more information about participating, call (225) 921-5525.
The West Baton Rouge Convention & Visitors Bureau is seeking donations, volunteers and float submissions for Port Allen’s eighth annual Veterans on Parade.
This year’s event will be held at 1:30 p.m. Nov. 4 in downtown Port Allen.
