The Advocate has openings for the New Orleans Bureau.

1) New Orleans bureau chief

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The New Orleans bureau chief oversees a small staff of news writers focused on covering the Greater New Orleans area, with an emphasis on Orleans and Jefferson parishes. The New Orleans bureau chief is responsible for coordinating coverage of news events in the New Orleans with other editors at the newspaper and will serve as the primary point of contact between the New Orleans bureau and other areas of the news operation.

The New Orleans bureau chief will edit daily news stories for the Metro Desk, assign topics, events and stories to individual writers or reporters for coverage, and develop story or content ideas, considering reader or audience appeal. The successful candidate will be responsible for responding courteously and effectively to public inquiries regarding news topics and coverage, working with news editors and other editors in allocating available space for stories, photos and graphics, and supervising staff and stringers to ensure work is meeting deadlines. The New Orleans bureau chief will also verify facts, dates and statistics in sensitive news stories when necessary, coordinate activities of support staff, including obituary clerks, typists and news aides, review time sheets, stinger pay and expense reports, and do original reporting/writing as time permits.

The New Orleans bureau will not have an office initially but will operate as a virtual bureau with reporters and the bureau chief working from their homes and at wifi hot spots in the community. Must have a car and valid driver's license.

Required Education, Prior Work Experience & Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field required five years or more daily newspaper experience with some editing and supervisory experience required. Must be knowledgeable about the New Orleans area. Must be analytical and able to help reporters analyze complex material and convey information to readers and must be comfortable learning and using the latest digital technology for gathering and disseminating news. Successful candidate must value graphics and photos as important elements in news packages and be willing to explore new approaches to covering the news.

2) The Staff writer/reporter

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

New Orleans Bureau reporters will be responsible for ongoing news coverage of the greater New Orleans area with an emphasis on Orleans and Jefferson parishes. Coverage will target readers in the New Orleans area and much of what the reporters produce will be showcased in the New Orleans edition of The Advocate. The job includes reporting on breaking news stories as well as doing longer range and deeper stories. Must be able to coordinate with photographers and freelance writers.

Required Education, Prior Work Experience & Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

Bachelor's degree in journalism or a related field plus three years of newspaper experience required. Successful candidate must have working knowledge of computers and major office equipment. Photographic and Internet skills a plus. New Orleans bureau reporters will work out of their homes. Some night and weekend work required. Must have a car and valid driver's license.

3) Sportswriter

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The New Orleans bureau sportswriter will report to The Advocate sports editor and will be responsible for covering sports news emanating from the New Orleans area. The primary areas of concern will be professional sports and college sports with some lesser attention to high school sports events and news. Will work with Baton Rouge-based sports writers in covering various beats of interest to New Orleans readers. Responsible for spot news coverage of athletic events, as well as writing in-depth stories on sports issues and features on sports topics and personalities. Must be able to file clean copy on deadline. Night and weekend work required. Travel to cover sports events is required. New Orleans Sportswriter will work out of their home. Some night and weekend work required. Must have a car and valid driver's license.

Required Education, Prior Work Experience & Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field with three years experience and/or training required. Must have prior experience covering sports and be knowledgeable about fine points of various sports. Must have knowledge of or ability to learn multi-media production, communication, and dissemination techniques and methods using digital technology.

4) Copy editor

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

The job consists of editing news stories for accuracy and fairness, writing headlines and designing and building news pages using an InDesign pagination system. Must be willing to learn new skills that will facilitate more interaction between traditional news operations and digital media. The job includes night hours and weekend work. Work may include working with a variety of news content, including hard news, features and sports. The job requires experience in all aspects of daily newspaper copy desk work, including but not limited to grammar, libel issues, newspaper style and newspaper page-design principles. This person will work at The Advocate's main administration building in Baton Rouge.

Required Education, Prior Work Experience & Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

Bachelor's degree in journalism or related field and at least two years copy editing experience.

Good organizational and time management skills are a must. Previous pagination in InDesign a plus. Knowledge of new digital media, including electronic devices, such as e-tablets and smartphones, is very desirable. Familiarity with social media also highly desired. Must be facile at learning new software systems for handling news copy, photos and graphics.

5) Photographer

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

This position will be based in New Orleans and will take photographs primarily for the New Orleans edition of The Advocate and www.2theadvocate.com. Must work with reporters, editors and others to generate ideas for photos to illustrate stories and/or to capture news events and activities in the New Orleans area with an emphasis on Orleans and Jefferson Parishes. Must be proficient or able to learn the latest in digital technology for both production and transmission of photos. Constantly standing, moving, carrying camera gear and using vision to take accurate photographs required.

New Orleans bureau photographer will work out of his/her home. Some night and weekend work required. Must have a car and valid driver's license.

Required Education, Prior Work Experience & Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

Bachelor's degree in photojournalism or related field required with at least three years experience shooting photographs for a daily publication. Knowledge of digital photography is a must. Must be proficient with all aspects of digital photography, studio lighting, imaging and editing software.

Must have a working knowledge of computer equipment, communication and transmitting devices, convergence and online coverage. Successful candidate must have attention to detail and be able to gather basic information to assist with writing captions for photos. Must be able to use both MAC and PC platforms.

6) Print Media Sales Representative

Summary of Primary Duties and Responsibilities:

We are looking for an experienced, accomplished advertising salesperson to represent our print publication products in the greater New Orleans market. This position is salaried plus commission.

Required Education, Prior Work Experience & Specialized Skills and Knowledge:

Ideal candidate will have print publication sales experience, excellent customer service skills, excellent written, verbal, communication and organizational skills, be goal oriented, and able to manage multiple priorities and work well in a deadline-driven environment.
