Symphony Chorus seeks new members
Auditions for the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra Chorus will continue to Friday, Aug. 31. Auditions are by appointment only at Broadmoor United Methodist Church, 10230 Mollylea Drive. Once chorus members are chosen, rehearsals will be Monday nights from Sept. 10 through Nov. 26, then Jan. 7 through Feb. 18, 2013. The chorus will perform with the Baton Rouge Symphony Orchestra on Nov. 29, Dec. 2 and Feb. 20, 2013. David Shaler is the director. At Baton Rouge Gallery
Baton Rouge Gallery,1515 Dalrymple Drive, will introduce its new logo at 7 p.m. Wednesday, Sept. 5, along with a new, user-friendly website. The gallery also will introduce the book, The Art & Artists of Baton Rouge Gallery, a collection of more than 150 works by 45 of the gallery’s artist members. Also, the in-gallery experience will be improved with multiple new benches in gallery spaces, new signage and a more welcoming patio area. Arts Market set
The next Baton Rouge Arts Market will be 8 a.m.-noon Saturday, Sept. 1, at 5th and Main streets. The market runs in conjunction with the weekly Red Stick Farmers Market and the Main Street Market. CANstruction in BR
The American Institute of Architects Baton Rouge is joining forces with the Louisiana Art & Science Museum and the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank to raise hunger awareness and kick off Hunger Action Month with the “Green Eggs and Can!” CANstruction® project. The project invites participants from the design, building and business communities to take part in a design/build competition that challenges teams to build structures entirely of canned food and other non-perishable food items. At the end of the competition and public viewing at the museum, 100 River Road S., all food will be donated to the Greater Baton Rouge Food Bank. Preview night is set for 7-10 p.m. Friday, Aug. 31. Creative speaker named
Creative Louisiana, a monthly morning meetup for creative types, will feature composer Nick Hwang at its meeting on Friday, Aug. 31, at Baton Rouge Gallery, 1515 Dalrymple Drive. In conjunction with the What’s Up, Doc? The Animated Art of Chuck Jones fall exhibit, the LSU Student Union Art Advisory Committee will host two educational programs that will discuss the life and legacy of renowned animator Chuck Jones, his work, and his artistic medium. Both programs will be at the gallery, Raphael Semmes Drive on campus:
- 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Aug. 28, the panel discussion,“The Looney Tunes: An American Pastime,” covering such topics such as Jones’ influences, his artistic style, and his impact on modern animation and pop culture, followed by a celebration of Jones’ 100th birthday with cake and refreshments.
- 12:30 p.m. Wednesday, Aug. 29, lecture, “The Origins of Animation,” by Professor Yeon Choi of the University of Louisiana at Lafayette. Refreshments will be served.

BRBT booking shows
The Baton Rouge Ballet Theatre is booking in-school performances of Into the Swamp: Healthy Choices Win as part of its Ballet for Children community outreach program.
This 45-minute interactive program is geared toward children in kindergarten through the fifth grade and is designed to introduce dance as part of a healthy lifestyle. The performance fee for the 2012-13 school year is $500, and there are some scholarship funds available for schools with special needs.

Program receives scholarship
The first scholarship for the University of Louisiana at Lafayette undergraduate degree program in traditional music was announced last week by the Michot Family, LLC.
The L.J. Michot Sr. Memorial Endowed Scholarship will help students who are pursuing a music degree with a concentration in traditional music.
The degree concentration, which starts this fall semester, focuses on the preservation and perpetuation of traditional music with an emphasis on the Acadiana region’s indigenous music.
Michael Michot presented Dr. Garth Alper, director of the UL Lafayette School of Music and Performing Arts, with an additional donation by the Michot Family for the endowed scholarship fund.

Frey’s painting chosen
The Louisiana Bicentennial Commission has chosen New Orleans artist Jax Frey’s print of her “Lovin’ Louisiana” pelican mini painting to be one of the official Louisiana Bicentennial products.
Portions of the profits from this print will benefit funds for Louisiana education programs in kindergarten through the eighth grade.
Frey is known as the Mistress of the Minis.
