BROUSSARD — Broussard has opened a new sewage treatment plant that will use area wetlands to help filter waste water, city officials announced Tuesday.
The $6 million facility expands Broussard’s existing treatment system to serve a growing population.
Sewage will flow into a 60-acre oxidation pond for preliminary treatment and then be dispersed through pipes into 1,600 acres of wetlands near Broussard where trees and wetland plants will further filter the water by soaking up the nutrients, according to a news release from the city.
Similar wetland treatment projects are in place in other areas of the state, including St. Martinville and Breaux Bridge, according to information from the state Department of Environmental Quality.
