More than 6,000 students have applied for vouchers under Louisiana’s expanded program for those attending troubled public schools, officials of the state Department of Education said Friday.
The state has about 7,400 seats available, including about 5,100 new ones and about 2,300 in New Orleans, which has operated such a program since 2008. The application deadline is June 29.
The new law applies to low- and middle-income students attending C, D and F schools, as rated by the state.
If applications exceed seats available state officials will hold a lottery next month.
Families would be notified by July 31.
