GONZALES — An autopsy was scheduled Tuesday to determine what caused the death of Mitchell Guist, 47, one of the stars of “Swamp People,” the History channel reality television show.
According to information released by the Ascension Parish Coroner’s Office, the final determination could take several weeks.
Mitchell Guist, who appeared in the series with co-star and brother Glenn Guist, collapsed Monday morning while working on a houseboat he was building on Belle River.
He was transported by ambulance to Teche Regional Medical Center in Morgan City, where he was pronounced dead on arrival.
Todd Alexander, a family friend, said Mitchell Guist’s body would be sent to Gonzales after the procedure. He added that funeral arrangements were pending.
“The family’s handling it as best they can,” Alexander said. “We were like brothers, and it’s a hard loss.”
Mitchell Guist, who had been building the houseboat, had just launched it and was pushing it when he collapsed, according to reports.
