Pam’s Party Line column for May 10, 2012

For 22 years Volunteers in Public Schools has been putting its own spin on the tradition of giving an apple to your favorite teacher when it hosts the VIPS Volunteer Picnic & Apple Awards. This year’s event took place May 1 at University Baptist Church.

Apple Awards

The most prestigious of the awards is the Crystal Apple, which goes to a person or group who has volunteered for 10 years or more. This year’s recipient was To Highland with Love, a community partner with Highland Elementary for the past 14 years.

Apple Award winners, chosen from among 59 nominees, included Matthew Coates, Istrouma High School, Volunteer Organizer; Claire Broering, Magnolia Woods Elementary, Elementary School Volunteer; Brian Nance, Glen Oaks High, Secondary School Volunteer; and Security Dads, Glen Oaks High, Community Partner Award.

Woman’s Club

It was all things dolls at the May 3 coffee of the Woman’s Club. Rose Sedberry brought along several dolls from the Enchanted Mansion and talked about their origin. She also explained that all proceeds from the mansion benefit the private nonprofit T.D.S. Memorial Foundation for the Handicapped.

Joining her on the morning’s program was cameo artist Louise Hanson, a still life artist who discussed her techniques and brought along several of her paintings.

Carole Gloger was coffee chairwoman for the last coffee of the season; Grace Moore was tea girl chairwoman. Assisting with the event were Thelma Herthum, Rosemary Lane, Jackie Kreutzer, Lois Saye, Mae Calvin Belton, Diane Finley, Jackie Creaghan, Alida Casey, Jo Hughes, Barbara McKinney, Diane Olinde, Margaret McKerley, Betty Palmer and Robin Richmond.

Items for “Pam’s Party Line” must be received by 9 a.m. the Monday preceding the run date. Digital photos should be emailed to pbordelon@theadvocate.com; hard copy photos should be dropped off at or mailed to The Advocate, 7290 Bluebonnet Blvd. Events will run no later than four weeks after they have taken place. The date, place of the event and a contact name and phone number must be included. Photos may not include more than nine people and will be used on a space-available basis. Hard copy photos can be picked up in the lobby of The Advocate for up to three months after they run. By submitting photos to The Advocate, you agree that they can be published in any of The Advocate’s print or digital publications.
