U-High boys, girls sweep tennis titles

MONROE — The University High boys and girls tennis teams each won Thursday in a sweep of the Division IV state tournaments.

The U-High boys scored 11 points to clip Newman, which had 10 points. The U-High girls had 11 points to get by Academy of Sacred Heart with 10 points.

For the U-High boys, Tapper Patrick and Frank Leonard defeated Chris Koch and Sean Laughlin of Newman to win the doubles title, and Coleman Wahlborg lost to Bunkie’s Darren Thevenote in the singles final.

For the U-High girls, Billie Rodman and Cary Wahlborg lost to Episcopal’s Lindsay Ferrell and Megan Scott in the doubles final, and Caroline Hudson lost to Academy of Sacred Heart’s Caroline Brinson in the singles final.

Division III

Parkview Baptist’s Chris Anders and West Feliciana’s Basia Walters took individual honors in the Division III state tournaments.

Anders beat Jeremiah Capdaville of Jennings in the singles final. He also played on the Parkview doubles team that lost to Loyola in the doubles championship.

Parkview finished as the state runner-up behind Loyola, with each team scoring 12 points.

Walters beat Loyola’s Ryan Barham for her singles title.

Berwick beat out E.D. White to win the Division III girls championship as each team had eight points.

Division IV

Christian Life’s Bobby Foroughian brought home the boys singles title, knocking off Country Day’s Cook Carpenter in the singles final of the Division IV state tournament.

St. Frederick’s girls kept Country Day from scoring its own boys-girls sweep in the team race.

St. Frederick won the girls title, totaling 12 points to top Country Day with nine. Country Day’s boys had 16 points, easily enough to outdistance Episcopal-Acadiana with nine points.

Elaine Simon of St. Frederick defeated Maggie Manning of Cedar Creek, who withdrew, for the girls singles title. Country Day’s doubles team knocked off St. Frederick’s in the doubles final.

On the boys side, Country Day beat Episcopal-Acadiana for the doubles championship.
