East Ascension knocks off No. 3 Sam Houston

Nick Ourso drove in three runs as No. 30 seed East Ascension upset No. 3 seed Sam Houston 7-4 in the first round of the Class 5A state baseball playoffs Wednesday in Lake Charles.

Tyler Robertson (3-3) got the victory for the Spartans (18-17). Tyler Dalton (6-2) got the loss for the Broncos (23-9).

Jace Fairchild contributed two hits, including a double, and an RBI, and Austin Millet added two doubles among East Ascension’s 11 hits. Cameron Esthey hit a solo home run for Sam Houston.

The Spartans took the lead for good with a five-run second inning. The Broncos closed to 5-2 in the bottom of the third, but East Ascencion built the lead to 7-2 in the top of the sixth. Sam Houston scored twice in the bottom of the sixth, but couldn’t get any closer.

Class 3A

L ivonia 3, Brusly 0: Mason Klotz pitched a shutout and drove in a run as defending state champion Livonia (27-3) beat Brusly (20-14) in a second-round game at Livonia.

Ty Gurr hit a home run to help support Klotz (6-1). Brusly had just three hits.

ST. MICHAEL-TEURLINGS DELAYED: Teurlings Catholic held a 5-4 lead over St. Michael the Archangel in a Class 4A regional game that was suspended on Wednesday in Lafayette because of heavy rain.

The game will resume Thursday in the bottom of the third inning at TCHS, said SMHS coach Johnny Bernhard.

Game times

Lutcher High’s Class 4A regional playoff game with Tioga was rained out Wednesday and has been rescheduled for 3:30 p.m. Thursday.

Several teams have already announced game times for their next playoff games. In 5A, Zachary will host Hahnville for a regional game at 2 p.m. Saturday. Also set for 2 p.m. Saturday is Calvin at Family Christian in Class C quarterfinal action.

Two other 5A teams will have their regional games Monday. Catholic hosts top-seeded Barbe at 4 p.m., while Dutchtown travels to Kirsch-Rooney Stadium in New Orleans to play Brother Martin at 6 p.m.
